Helping IDPs in Pollanuruwa Hospital

A group of young people have been delivering aid to the Pollonaruwa hospital where a1108 of displaced people are treated. This location is often ignored by mainstream aid initiatives we are told. The next delivery date is 20th of June 2009.

Following is a needs-list from the hospital:

UNHCR calls for Donations to help Sri Lanka

UNHCR is asking for funds to bring emergency relief to the thousands of people fleeing the fighting in Sri Lanka. Your donations will help UNHCR provide needed shelter, water and emergency support to the civilians.

Donations can be made through the UNHCR website.

Save Lanka to Assist IDPs in Vanni (Colombo)

There are over 100,000 people in IDPs who are in desperate need for assistance to sustain their lives. These people have suffered tremendously for the past 25 years from the war. Now they have been rescued from this suffering and are living in camps right now.

These are our own brothers and sisters. We need your urgent assistance now to rebuild their lives. Now it is the time to do what we can to help them recover and rebuild their lives before it is too late.

Therefore, we would appreciate very much your kind support in this regard to help our fellow brothers and sisters. You could either help in a personal or at an organizational level.

The following items are being collected right now for immediate dispatch:

  • Dry rations
  • Paracetamol cards
  • Plasters
  • Jeewani
  • Glucose
  • Soap
  • Water bottles
  • Milk powder
  • Sugary biscuits (Lemon puff, Marie , Chocolate biscuits)
  • cerelac cereal etc..
  • Used or New clothes for IDP's.

Please contribute to this worthy cause in anyway possible way. We will be dispatching the first load of items by the 4th of May.

Sarvodaya Accepts Donations to help IDPs in Vanni

Anyone wanting to contribute towards the IDPs can do so through Sarvodaya, which now accepts donations online as well as through bank transfers and deposits. Below is from the Sarvodaya website.

There has been a mass exodus of civilians escaping from the war zone in the Mullaitivu District during the last few days resulting in an emergency situation in the Vavuniya district where Sarvodaya has been providing humanitarian relief services for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) during the last 4 months supplementing the efforts of the government, UN agencies and the International humanitarian organizations. The number of IDP sites have more than doubled during this week and Sarvodaya has been called upon to meet the increased demand for food, water & sanitation shelter, care for the children, public health services. We are making this call to all Sarvodaya friends to make any contribution you can make at this critical hour. All donations will be individually acknowledged and accounted for and regular reports and financial statements will be posted on this site.

Open Mic at King's College (UK) to raise funds for IDPs

The student community of King's College, along with the rest of the University of Cambridge, is pushing to support these people, hosting an open mic night with a clear focus this Thursday.
It will be a great way to get away from revision for a few hours, listen to some good music and make a definite difference in the lives of so many who need it so badly.

Money from the event will be donated to ACT Lanka.
