'8 Track Shack' - Aid Collection for Vanni from UK

Many of you will know the horrific situation currently present in Sri Lanka. A raging civil war of 25 years has come to a head, resulting in a huge number of casulaties and even larger number of people displaced without food, water and medical care. The UN estimates that since Jan 2009, 6,500 civilians have been killed and 14,000 have been injured. Around 100,000 however are now without home and food.

The student community of King's College, along with the rest of the University of Cambridge, is pushing to support these people, hosting an open mic night with a clear focus this Thursday.

It will be a great way to get away from revision for a few hours, listen to some good music and make a definite difference in the lives of so many who need it so badly.

Help Sri Lanka. Donate a Sarong – A Sarong Drive by Ruby Studio

The sarong is one of the most versatile garments ever made and can be used for a myriad of different things, including cradling babies, a covering sheet for children, a wraparound for women, a makeshift shelter from the sun, a towel… the list goes on. The sarong is not just for men, it can help ease the lives of those who have little or nothing.

Our fellow countrymen, women and children in the North-East are enduring extreme hardship. The images we see, despite censorship, are clear. They need immediate relief. Food and water supplies have started to trickle in and the reality is that people have nothing but the clothes on their backs and babes in their arms.

We can help. We can do more than click our tongues and shake our heads with sadness. We can send in the Versatile Sarong.

Ruby Studio is organizing a Sarong Drive to help cloth and support internally displaced people in the North-East. Donate this most basic of garments and be assured that it will be put to good use by people who need them the most. The first batch of sarongs leave this weekend, and we hope to hit a target of 10,000 sarongs by Friday the 1st of May 2009.

Whatever our politics, whatever our views on the war, the comfort and utility of a sarong cannot be debated.

Drop Point:

Ruby Studio, 125 Fife Road, First Floor (Above Mythi Caterers) from 8am to 8pm.

Aid to Vavuniya and Padaviya - ACTlanka

Action & Care Trust is ready to make its second delivery. This time, we will be delivering supplies to both Vavuniya and Padaviya Hospitals.

List of supplies:

For kids:
  • Pedia Sure
  • Nan 1 & 2/LACTOGEN
  • Nutrigeon
  • Anchor 1+
  • Nebulisers
  • Pediatric Nebulising Masks
  • Domperidome Syrup/Suppositories
  • Volteron suppositories, for kids
  • Blood Pressure Monitors, for kids
  • Anti-biotics
  • Painkillers
  • Kids clothes

For Adults

  • Roll up mattresses
  • Bed pans
  • Adult Diapers
  • Macintoshes
  • Sterilised Gauze/Dressings
  • Housecoats/Sarongs
  • Local Applications (Fucidin, Soframycin etc)
  • Drugs (Anti-bios, Painkillers)
  • Ryhydration Salts (Jeevani)
  • IV Stands
  • High-energy Supplements

The ACT Trustees have decided that we remain in Phase 1, which will be an on-going commitment of emergency relief support to the hospitals that are receiving the injured. Therefore, the second delivery will be considered Phase 1: Part 2.

We have plans for Phase 2 (Rehabilitation) and Phase 3 (Sustainability). However, we expect to remain in Phase 1 until we are no longer needed.

We have a large consignment of medicine coming in (thanks once again to ACT Member Govinda Tidball). Therefore we will not be concentrating as heavily on purchasing anti-biotics and painkillers. We have decided instead, based on the high number of infants and children under 5, that our focus this time will be PEDIATRICS and associated supplies. We have learned (and seen) that malnutrition and respiratory infections are the primary concern in the pediatric wards. Therefore milk and high energy supplements is a priority. We will also purchase nebulisers for children.

The other patients also need our care. Our Chairman Professor Sheriffdeen travelled to Vavuniya and Padaviya on Saturday, at the request of the Ministry of Health. He confirms our own sentiments, that over-crowding is a major problem. Vavuniya Hospital (as of today) has capacity for 430, but has 1,200 warded patients and including families, over 3000 people reside at the Hospital. Padaviya Hospital currently has 1,500 patients, once again with a high number of babies.

We have wholesale pricing on all goods so please contact us if purchasing directly, we will give you our pricing. We hope to make the next delivery within 2 weeks, pending the arrival of our imported medicine.

We, the Trustees of ACT, would like to thank all of you who worked to make our first delivery possible. The same Teams will now manage the second delivery. We hope we can count on your continued support. Please contact us asap if you have any queries.
