Aid Collection for Pulmoddai

An effort is underway by a group of people to collect urgent items for an estimated 7,000 refugees in a camp in Pulmoddai. An aid worker who visited the area suggests that we might want to concentrate on meeting the needs of the approximately 4,000 women there. This is an urgent request for donations to collect the following:

Sanitary napkins for 1 month - 4000 X 2 Eva / Free & Easy packets = 8000 in total

Women's panties (large) 4000 X 3 = 12,000

Bras - (sizes 32 - 34) 4000 X 3 = 12,000

This need is not medically urgent these children need hope as well as healing. It’s a small thing, but a toy or a game can mean a lot to a child, especially one who’s seen significant trauma and has very little. We hope you can help.

A Sarong to Make a Difference

Last week Ruby Studio launched a sarong drive for internally displaced people (IDP) in the North East of Sri Lanka under the banner - Send in the Versatile Sarong! The drive had limited success. We had a target of 10,000 sarongs but we collected just over 200! We thank all those who donated this versatile garment. We have subsequently involved schools and churches in the drive and this should increase the number of sarongs to be donated... having said that... we appeal once again to those who read these emails, forward them on, but do nothing more... we appeal to you to make May 2009, the sarong month!

What you can do this May:

  • Set up a collection box/bin in your office for all of May to collect either new or freshly laundered sarongs (in good condition)
  • Set up a 'Sarong Pool' to collect money for sarongs that can either be purchased by you or funds can be donated to Ruby Studio for purchasing sarongs.
  • Speak with your neighbours, friends and family over dinner, a coffee, or a cold beer. Its just a sarong. It can cost less than Rs.200. We don't want Barefoot designer sarongs!
  • Stop thinking it'll make no difference! A child could sleep more comfortably, adults protect their modesty, in times and circumstances where sleep and respect are scarce.

Drop-off Point:
Ruby Studio, 125 Fife Road, First Floor (Above Mythi Caterers) from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday all through May.
